This state is located in southern Mexico, in a tropical region called the Oaxaca Valley in the Sierra Madre.
Oaxaca boasts a rich cultural heritage, with diverse indigenous communities, folk music and dance, and a unique cuisine.
Its capital is the city of Oaxaca de Juarez (named after President Benito Juarez). It is a popular tourist destination known for its colonial architecture, museums and archaeological sites, such as the ruins of Monte Alban.
This state is the cradle of several pre-Columbian ethnic groups, notably the Zapotecs, whose particularly refined crafts are a mainstay of the local economy. In the villages, you'll find weaving workshops, high-quality Barro Negro pottery and "alebrijes", colorful allegorical figurines of imaginary animals. This region of Mexico is particularly famous for its production of mezcal, a type of alcoholic beverage made from agave.
