Chiapas

Bordering Guatemala, Chiapas is Mexico's southernmost state, with a population of around 5 million.

It's known for its native cultural diversity, scenic beauty and historic sites.

The state has a rich history, marked by ancient Mayan civilization, the Spanish conquest and more recent struggles for the rights and autonomy of indigenous peoples, through the actions of what some locals consider a hero, Subcomandante Marcos.

Chiapas is home to many indigenous communities, including the Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Ch'ol and Zoque, and Lacandons among others. These communities have their own languages, traditions and ways of life. Many of them still practice traditional agriculture and crafts.

Sites archéologiques, villages pittoresques, nature luxuriante, le Chiapas est une région aux activités variées qui sauront attiser votre curiosité.

Chiapas is also known for its stunning natural beauty, with lush forests, waterfalls and mountains. Among the state's most popular tourist destinations are the archeological site of Palenque, Sumidero Canyon and the Agua Azul waterfalls.

Despite its natural and cultural riches, Chiapas is also one of Mexico's poorest states. Many indigenous communities live in poverty and face discrimination. There have been many social and political struggles in the state, including the Zapatista uprising of 1994, which brought the region to the attention of the international community.
